October is ADHD Awareness Month, and a lot of the conversation this time of year is about adults who got missed for decades because they looked fine on paper. Anxiety gets missed the exact same way, especially the high-functioning kind, because nobody sends the kid who turns everything in early to the school counselor. You got the grades, you got the promotion, you remembered everyone’s birthday, and the whole time your brain was running a background program that never once powered down. These are all signs of high functioning anxiety and we need to talk about them.
What Are The Signs of High-Functioning Anxiety?
It hides inside the stuff we reward. Overachieving looks like drive, people pleasing looks like being so easy to work with, perfectionism looks like high standards, and staying constantly busy looks like being productive. From the outside you’re the woman who has it together, and from the inside it’s a very different story.
Maybe you recognize it at work, where you reread a three line email four times before hitting send and then check your sent folder to make sure it actually went. Maybe it’s in your relationships, where you say “I’m fine, whatever works for you” and then lie awake wondering why you can’t say what you actually want. Maybe it’s parenting, where you’re physically at the playground and mentally three steps ahead, packing tomorrow’s lunch and rehearsing what you’ll say at the pediatrician appointment. Or maybe it’s the moment your calendar finally opens up and instead of relief you feel a low hum of dread, so you fill it, immediately, with something productive.
None of those moments look like a problem on their own, which is how it gets missed. Each one gets filed under personality, a little intense, a little type A, a little much, and after enough years of that you stop asking whether it has to cost this much. And as a therapist for women, I can’t tell you have often I sit across from women and see the signs of high-functioning anxiety and noone’s ever named it for them.
Why High Functioning Anxiety Goes Undetected for So Long?
Because the results look great. Anxiety usually gets noticed when it causes problems other people can see, like missed deadlines, avoidance, or panic. High-functioning anxiety makes you MORE on time, MORE prepared, and MORE agreeable, so it gets praised instead of noticed. Teachers loved you, bosses love you, your friends call you the reliable one, and nobody ever asked how it felt to be you.
A lot of us also learned early that being anxious was just what being responsible felt like. If you were the kid who worried about everyone else’s feelings, that got called mature. If you were the one who double checked everything, that got called conscientious. Needless to say, nobody was looking for a problem, because from where they stood there wasn’t one.
Can Therapy Help If I’ve Coped This Long?
Yes. Coping this long means you’re resourceful, and it also means you’ve been white-knuckling a lot of years and gotten really good at it. Therapy doesn’t take your coping strategies away, we figure out what they’ve been protecting you from and build a few that don’t cost you your sleep. A lot of the women I work with come in after years of being told they were just driven. You don’t have to be falling apart to start, and you don’t have to show up knowing the right label, that’s actually part of what a first session is for.
If you’re reading this thinking okay, that’s a little too specific, I’d love to hear from you. I see clients online from wherever you are in Elk Grove, Sacramento, or anywhere across California, and a first session is just a conversation about what’s been going on, so you can book whenever you’re ready.
